I received the Dell on Nov 19 and immediately started loading Updates after startup. This is where the problems started.I have a 58 Mbps Internet connection and downloads are usually very, very fast.I took 2-3 hours to download the first file, which was a conglomeration of many fixes. The Installation went relatively fast. The next download was Service Pack 1 and that took 3-4 hours.
I checked my Network speed at speedtest.net several times and it indicated from 1 Mbps to 10 Mbps and wouldn't even start a few times.I had my old computer on the table next to it, so I moved the Ethernet cable from the Dell to the old computer and ran Speedtest several times, always indicating 58-59 Mbps. This pretty much told me that the Network card on the Dell was Bad.
I filed a return with Amazon and it was approved by the seller, who wasCandance Ross, thru Amazon - BUT, I was to pay the return shipping fee, which was $65.00.I thought that was not right, since I bought a new computer, but was sold a DEFECTIVE one.I have learned my lesson to not buy through one of the Amazon partners, because I am sure that Amazon would have paid for the shipping costs to return it.

This is my first Dell computer after 20 years of owning Compaq & Hewlett Packard PCs. I'm pleased so far. It was easy to set up & run from the start. I had no problems getting it up & going. It did take a little while to delete the fluff & set it up the way I prefer, but that would be true of any new PC . I'm not a big fan of Windows 10 yet, it seems to want to take more control of my computing & requires more effort on my part to save folders where I want them. But that's an OS issue, not hardware issue. If not for my mild disappointment with Windows 10, I would have given it 5 stars. Most others I've talked to like 10. This Dell seems to be a good computer, we'll see how it holds up in the long run. I'm satisfied & pleased with it so far...

After looking at regular minimal requirement computers and gaming computers, I decided that this was a good compromise for requirements and price.I play the Sims 3, with about a million downloads to customize houses, and use my video editing software. It handles both well.

I don't know if this unit was refurbished or what but the way it was shipped, it's contents packaged and the simple instruction, etc., it makes you question if it was. First, hooked it up, plugged it in, and the desktop couldn't detect the WIFI during setup. After several hours with Dell tech support, it was determined that several drivers were missing, including the WIFI driver and front USB drivers. Did an ethernet connection, a remote assist and still couldn't update the drivers, even in safe mode. After 3 hours, the screen went blank and started to illustrate all the different colors in the rainbow with intermittent static shots. What a joke. Dell wanted to send a tech out to fix, within the next 3 business days. BIOS reported that no WIFI card was installed after trying to update drivers so tech determined it's also a hardware issue. I asked why wasn't this tested before being shipped out and they responded that since it was Amazon's product for sale, they are suppose to test it.
I am shipping it back today. What a joke and waste of my time! Black Friday is around the corner, I'll find a better deal and comp. I only bought this machine because of all the rave reviews. Just proves again, how much that really matters.

Soooo much faster than my Acer laptop, which did its job, but just not fast enough. I have photoshop, lightroom, premiere pro, and a bunch of other Adobe Creative Cloud programs on this computer, and it hasn't slowed down at all. I have my photos and other documents on an external harddrive so it doesn't get bogged down, and it works GREAT!

This makes the third Dell Inspiron that I have brought and this one worked much like the others. After a few start up miss steps (user error) it cranked up and ran like it should. Not a bad purchase for me......

I called Dell to find out why the MS Office Trial wasn't working and found out it was already 92 days old. Doesn't make sense since I bought it 2/5/16 and received it, plugged it in on 2/11/16. So far no response from the seller.
Here it is 10/5/16 with no response from Amazon, except a "Thank you feedback email" and no response from the seller, I now have a desktop computer that is not working. Do I call Dell, the seller or Amazon? Not sure of the direction to go. The computer was set up without a password and now it will not continue to the desktop until I put in a password. So what's a customer to do when we have this kind of problem????

The Dell Inspiron i3542-6666BK is a pretty good laptop that runs fast and has plenty of space, but suffers from poor design and build quality. For the price of the laptop, it's a pretty good deal. You probably won't find a cheaper laptop with the same hardware. I like the computer and give it a 3/5. I recommend it to anyone who needs a cheap, 15 inch laptop with a full keyboard and higher-end processor, RAM, and hard drive. Pros, Cons, and category reviews follow.
Pros: Processor, RAM, Hard drive space, Lightweight, Battery life
Hardware: The computer runs nice and fast with the i5-4210u processor. The integrated graphics work well and will run older or low resource games. (League of Legends, Minecraft, and Fallout 3 work well on this machine). With 8gb of RAM, there is plenty of memory to go around for all you applications and the integrated graphics. You won't need to upgrade the memory for a while. The 1 TB hard drive is spacious, and would never fill up for an average consumer. The "pop-out" style DVD tray seems a little janky, but is a standard on Windows computers I guess. The keyboard is full sized and has a keypad, which isn't useful to me, but might be to some. There is no backlight on the keyboard, which isn't needed, but is really appreciated and is a nice touch on a laptop. The trackpad is a little small for the size of the computer. It is a single piece of plastic with a left click function on the bottom left and a right click function on the bottom right. The click noise is quite loud, leading to me to use the tap-to-click feature when I have to be quiet. Note: The dell trackpad drivers on this and many other dell laptops have issues with Google Chrome right now, causing the computer to lose focus on Chrome whenever scrolling. This means after scrolling you can't type until clicking on the Chrome browser. There also seems to be issues with horizontal scrolling in Chrome. The camera is 720p, and the microphone seems standard, so this computer would work well when video or voice chatting. The screen is glossy and has a resolution of 1366 x 768, which is fine, but can seem low quality in comparison to other laptops. The speakers are pretty terrible. The sound is tinny and not very loud. When the speakers are at 100%, the sound can't fill a room. It's embarrassing to listen to music on these speakers. Invest in headphones or external speakers if you buy this laptop. The battery life is good, lasting 4-5 hours of light use before needing to be plugged in.
Look and Style: The case looks pretty nice. The top of the screen case is textured, which is nice, but the oils from your hand will stick to the case and leave marks that have to be rubbed out. I would much prefer a smooth, hard plastic case. The computer itself is pretty thick, especially when compared to other modern laptops. However, the case is still thin enough to look slim when closed on a desk. There is a "hump" at the top of the keyboard case section (you can see it in a side look at the computer) that I don't particularly like the look of. I don't really understand why it's there because it doesn't seem to serve a purpose and looks pretty bad. There are two stickers on the keyboard case section, one advertising the computer's features, and one advertising the Intel processor. You get used to them being there, but I think they detract from the design of the laptop.
Build Quality: The computer is made entirely from plastic, and can feel flimsy and cheaply made at times, but it holds up fine. The plastic screen border is already kind of loose. After some intense use, the spacebar started to squeak a little, but it stopped and hasn't started again. The computer never seems to get too hot, so the hardware shouldn't fry itself. The computer as a whole is pretty light, and is mobile. The trackpad does not seem to be sealed, and you can see the hardware underneath it. I would suspect a hardware failure if water got onto the trackpad.
Ports: The power plug is on the top left, followed by a fan exhaust grill, an HDMI port, an ethernet port, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.0 port, and a headphone jack. On the right starting from the top there is a DVD drive, a USB 2.0 port, and an SD card reader. There is no VGA port, which would be useful to some, but I don't think it should be required in today's times. There is a port for a Kensington Lock on the lop left side panel. Note: The design of the ethernet port causes it to be very difficult to remove an ethernet cable. You must bend the cable head away from the laptop before being able to press down the lever that unhooks the cable, which is pretty annoying.
Features: There is a quick access panel for upgrading your RAM, which is a nice touch. The bottom case also seems to be able to be fully disassembled.
Windows 8.1: This computer comes with a Windows 8.1 OEM (meaning no disc). You will need a DVD or flash drive to back up your copy of Windows 8.1. No one really likes Windows 8.1, but it's alright once you get used to it. It doesn't look as good as Windows 7 since the transparent title bars and task bar are gone. I haven't found a use for the start menu and the Metro apps. I don't like having to sync with my Microsoft account to use certain Metro apps, which also changes your computer's login to your Microsoft Account login. The most useful aspect of the start screen is the search function. All you do is press the windows key from the desktop and start typing to search both your computer and the web. It's similar to OS X's Spotlight, but without the integration into the desktop. Pressing the windows button to bring up the start screen is very responsive. The other most useful thing about the start screen is the Weather tile, which you can set to your location and simply press the windows key to view the current weather. Windows 8.1 and the start menu aren't as bad as people say it is, and once you know how to use it, it's a pretty easy transition to the new OS.

Granted, I bought this laptop almost two years ago and I'm using it right now to post, but I seriously wish I had just shelled out another 2-300 bucks for something more powerful. For what it is, it's fine, I guess. I didn't know much about specs at the time, but the 1TBHD/i5/8GB Ram was better than the 100GBHD/Pentium/2GB of Ram I was working with before. Didn't know anything about integrated or dedicated video cards, or the importance of clock speed or anything else for that matter. Without a doubt, it was an upgrade for me, but I fell into the trap of thinking it was stronger than it is. I can't say that anything about this computer or the ad was deceptive, but it's easy for someone without any true understanding to think this is a great deal. Do NOT expect this to be a gaming lap top. I've tried all the tricks in the book (you can't overclock this) as far as unparking CPUs, dethrottling, etc. And while I can play a few (relatively) older games on lower settings, like Skyrim, forget about trying to play something that requires serious processing, even something as old as Sims 3. I'm not a graphics-queen; I don't need or expect ultra settings even in older games, but what I did expect was performance and a lack of laggy stuttering, especially since I didn't mind playing on low-medium most times. I'll probably keep this after I get my new machine, but for basic browsing and the portability that comes along with a lap top. That and the fact that it's so outdated now that it's basically not going to sell. Case and point, even this seller has 8 left and they aren't being manufactured anymore. I'd be greatly surprised if those remaining 8 ever sold.
Here I am now, about two years later, shopping for another computer. If I had been smart, I would've paid a little more then and maybe right now instead of buying an entirely new system, maybe I'd just be upgrading my video card or ram. Bottom line, you MIGHT be able to skate by for a little while, but if you intend to do any real gaming (Facebook or apps don't count), especially on a lap top, save your time and your money. The $500 or so I spent on this would've been put to MUCH better use getting something better. This time around, I won't be so impatient and order the first thing I see. I strongly advise any PC gaming newbies like me to look into specs, not just minimum specs, but recommended specs for the games you want to play and try to exceed them. If it's a little pricier than your budget allows, I assure you, you're better off waiting and saving up then 'compromising' and settling for something subpar. At the very least, get something that willl allow for reasonable upgrades in the future and for the love of Talos, stay AWAY from integrated graphics. This means if it doesn't say AMD or NVIDIA (preferred) or if it does say Intel HD Graphics, it sucky. Really sucky. Also learn from me that HD size and to a certain degree even ram can be negligible after a certain point. Modern games can only use so much and even then it's generally not TOO difficult to add more ram. Put a bigger priority on your graphics card and processor for best results.
Rated this a 4 initiallybecause the company that shipped the first laptop was not the correct one for the box it came in. Which delayed my daughter'sbirthday present. Amazondid a great job on shippinga replacementimmediatelyovernight at no cost to me. I return the other laptopwith in the same week. So far I can't tell you how Dell'Studio customer support is so againI only rate a 4 star. The computer itself is awesome. The I5 processor was a big improvement for my daughter. I run an I7 in my laptop and I didn'tsee too much differenceon her's. Camera is great, full keyboard with number pad was a plus for her. Graphics have no issue runningvideo. Wished it came with new WiFi A/C for quicker networking, but the standard a,g,n. Works fine.
I bought this computer for my parents, who rarely even use computers. They called me 2 weeks ago and told me that the computer wouldn't turn on.When they called the Dell customer service they were told it was a defective mother board and it would cost $100. The computer was less than 3 months old and not abused at all.I find it disappointing that nothing can be done for them.

I've noticed the touchpad's double click function needs some fixing. Often times I have to double-click 5 times, or even triple click in order to get something to open. Also, I have to constantly restart or shut down the laptop due to some sort of complication with loading something, Tons of lag and sudden crashes. Don't know if others have this problem, but mine makes weird noises every once in a while too. Would not recommend..
